The paper presents the main stages of the debate concerning the immateriality of the soul in 18th-century German philosophy, with a special focus on three central moments. The first one is Wolff’s attempt to provide a rational demonstration of immortality in the frame of his rational psychology; the second moment concerns the criticisms of such a claim raised by Meier and Crusius, and their ‘moral’ approach to the question; the third one considers the presence of the issue in Hißmann’s psychological materialism, and its theological implications.

Abstract
The paper presents the main stages of the debate concerning the immateriality of the soul in 18th-century German philosophy, with a special focus on three central moments. The first one is Wolff’s attempt to provide a rational demonstration of immortality in the frame of his rational psychology; the second moment concerns the criticisms of such a claim raised by Meier and Crusius, and their ‘moral’ approach to the question; the third one considers the presence of the issue in Hißmann’s psychological materialism, and its theological implications.File in questo prodotto:
