This Highlight presents the European Trade Policy Review, released by the European Commission on 18 February 2021. After summarizing the new trade strategy’s content, it focuses on Trade and Sustainable Development (TSD). First, it gives an overview on the evolution of TSD Chapters since their first appearance in 2009 EU - South Korea FTA. Then, it presents the related debate on their effectiveness, which has led the European Commission to the commitment to a review of the 15 point Action Plan on TSD Chapters early in 2021, considering the possibility of shifting to a sanction-based enforcement approach.
