Human faces result from multiple and complex dialectics between nature and culture, interiority and exteriority, individual and society. Each face is, therefore, both a source of spontaneous signification and one of more or less intentional and planned communication. In the history of cultures, however, there periodically appears the myth of artificial faces, produced spontaneously by nature outside of procreation or the fruit of chance, the work of transcendence or, in the current era, artificial intelligence. The essay analyzes the abovementioned dialectics and traces these cultural trajectories so as to wonder about the semiotics of the artificial face. What meaning is conveyed, in a culture, when it is associated with a face of mysterious origins?
