This article presents a teaching concept based on the comparison of conceptually and medially oral with conceptually written, medially oral communicative genres and pursues two goals: 1. to introduce advanced students to descriptive categories of spoken language research as well as to concepts of ‘language-in-interaction’ (Imo 2013) while incorporating their prior knowledge of written language categories; 2. to use deductive and inductive methods to reflect on genre-specific linguistic resources and - in an applicative phase - to try them out for themselves. Using a corpus of city and audio tours, similarities and differences in the realisation of both genres are worked out, communicative tasks constitutive of the genre and the corresponding linguistic means are reconstructed and their anchoring in the genre-specific interactional dimension is reflected upon.
