Il procurator ab ornamentis. Note sul custode dei gioielli imperiali nell'età del principato

This study is an in-depth analysis of the procurator ab ornamentis, the official responsible for the imperial jewellery during the Principate. The article is the first specialised paper on this functionary to appear. It attempts to identify the role of the procurator ab ornamentis in the palatine hierarchy. Indeed, to begin, the paper examines the few existing written documents defining the procurator ’s duties and his officium ’s organisation. It then undertakes to establish the history of this office and the possible link between the procurator and the praefecti gemmis vestique custodes working in the late Roman imperial court.
