Latinskie «ètimologii» i ob”jasnenija v Tolkovoj Psaltiri Brunona. Dvujazyčnoe izdanie

This article features a collection of “etymologies” taken from the commentary to Bruno’s Psalter, a compilation of the first half of the 11th century translated into Church Slavonic by Dmitry Gerasimov around 1535. According to medieval Latin etymology, to be intended as a way to ascertain the real meaning of words (and not their origin), words were often connected to each other on the basis of sound similarity. The main principle underlying these somehow fantastic and to our eyes unscientific interpretations was the idea to penetrate through the words to the things behind them; such an approach represented a very useful tool for the exegetical and catechetic explanation of the Holy Scripture. The bilingual edition of these “etymologies” provides interesting linguistic material on the cultural dialogue between Muscovy and the West.
