On the meaning of ἐμ μνήμασιν in two Attic 4th Century B.C. defixiones. DTA, nrr. 55 and 87 · In two Attic curse tablets dating back to the 4th Century B.C. – DTA, nrr. 55 and 87 – occurs the expression ἐμ μνήμασιν. Such an expression has generally been interpreted as “in tombs” or, figuratively, “in remembrance”. This paper suggests that these words might mean “in memorials” and allude to a feature, which – as testified by Plato (Leg. 933a-c) – seems to have characterized the execratory ritual in 4th Century Attica.
