This paper focuses on the use of French language in Italy at the end of the Middle Ages in music. A new catalog of French-texted pieces composed by Italian composers between 1340-1420 is dressed; it shows a considerable francophony in Italian composers of the time (sixty-four pieces). Moreover, this paper investigates the relationship between language and musical style and it questions on the possibility of a linguistic study of this poetry accompanied by music. Also, it focuses on a single source, MS I-Tn T.III.2, and the remarkable motet Le temps verra by Antonio Zacara da Teramo. Finally, it highlights the interest of a systematic linguistic analysis of francophone music in Italy – still missing – starting from the compositions here cataloged.
