By comparing different Italian city-states, the paper explores the relationship between aristocratic kin groups and their use of urban space, arguing for a political interpretation of the changes in spatial aspects of family life. Transformations which occurred between the twelfth and the sixteenth century are examined, and linked to the varying political role of lineages and kin groups.
