The restarting of the career of Aelius Aristides after an invalidating illness that had forced him to spend two years at the Asklepieion in Pergamum finds expression in the Birthday Speech to Apellas (or. 30, 4) in a peculiar image, which combines the portrait of Aristides ‘gift of Asclepius’ with the Platonic one of Socrates given by the god to the city (Plat. Ap. 30d-31c). Such an image of a man acting in the polis by divine will does not seem to appear in the speeches after the Birthday Speech, probably because Aristides shows in the following years a particular reluctance to dedicate himself to teaching in a continuous way.
