The popularity of new psychoactive substances among drug users has become a public health concern worldwide. New psychoactive substances are a large group of synthetic and plant derivatives mimicking the psychotropic effects of traditional and illicit drugs of abuse. These substances are generally sold in specialized street shops known as "head" or "smart" shops and in online stores. New psychoactive substances have been associated with numerous cases of severe intoxication and deaths across the world. In this chapter we examine this phenomenon, focusing our attention on the most popular and widespread substances appearing on the recreational drug market: synthetic cathinones and synthetic cannabinoids.
