The article analyses the unpublished correspondence between two renowned experts in Franciscan history, Paul Sabatier and Felice Tocco, which is held at the Fondazione Romolo Murri in Urbino. The main subject matter of these papers is the historical research on St. Francis of Assisi carried out in the late 19th and the early 20th centuries. The letters, principally dealing with the so-called "Franciscan question" but not solely, bring to light the viewpoints of Sabatier and Tocco about the study of the sources on the saint from Assisi, as well as the opinions and feedback of many other scholars, both Italian and foreign experts, contemporary to them or of the past, and mentioned in the correspondence.
