Due to the lack of melanin, People With Albinism (PWA) are more susceptible to the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation exposure. This population must deal with issues such as photophobia, decreased visual acuity, extreme sun sensitivity, and skin cancer. PWA also face social discrimination as a result of their difference in appearance, so they are a vulnerable population because of racism, violence, and trafficking, that led national and international state and non–state actors to commit themselves to do humanitarian advocacy, above all because the targeting of PWA is based to a certain extent on economic concerns.

Abstract

Due to the lack of melanin, People With Albinism (PWA) are more susceptible to the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation exposure. This population must deal with issues such as photophobia, decreased visual acuity, extreme sun sensitivity, and skin cancer. PWA also face social discrimination as a result of their difference in appearance, so they are a vulnerable population because of racism, violence, and trafficking, that led national and international state and non–state actors to commit themselves to do humanitarian advocacy, above all because the targeting of PWA is based to a certain extent on economic concerns.
