The paper focuses on the song contest between Apollo and Pan in Ov. met. 11, 146-194, a tale that stages a metapoetic reflexion on literary genres (as scholars have noted). Reading this episode in comparison with Orpheus’ myth (Ov. met. 10-11) and with Callimachus’ iambus 4, I examine its programmatic discourse, also related to some performance issues. Moreover, the contest facilitates the transition of the plot towards the Trojan section of the Metamorphoses.

Abstract

The paper focuses on the song contest between Apollo and Pan in Ov. met. 11, 146-194, a tale that stages a metapoetic reflexion on literary genres (as scholars have noted). Reading this episode in comparison with Orpheus’ myth (Ov. met. 10-11) and with Callimachus’ iambus 4, I examine its programmatic discourse, also related to some performance issues. Moreover, the contest facilitates the transition of the plot towards the Trojan section of the Metamorphoses.
