Quale storia della società? Uno sguardo sull'epoca moderna

Il saggio ricostruisce il profilo della rivista «Società e storia» verificando quanto essa si sia mantenuta coerente, nel volgere di quarant’anni, con le originarie linee programmatiche, considerando la frequenza e il profilo dei saggi che vi sono pubblicati dedicati all’età moderna. Storia della società, non storia sociale in senso stretto o esclusivo, in uno spazio-tempo che aveva tenuto conto inizialmente della storia dell'Europa occidentale a confronto con la storia italiana e che è inevitabilmente entrato in dialogo con una storiografia che ha ampliato i propri orizzonti d’analisi. L’occasione di questo bilancio consente di riflettere non solo su analogie e differenze di produzione scientifica fra varie riviste coeve, ma anche di leggere le trasformazioni nella direzione di uno strumento accademico sottoposto via via a stringenti parametri di valutazione qualitativa. Gli ultimi quarant'anni, d’altro canto, hanno da un lato chiuso un secolo densissimo dal punto di vista dei dibattiti storiografici e dall'altro lato aperto un secolo che sfida tradizioni e strumenti consolidati di ricerca con la minaccia di una cultura sempre più presentista. Interrogare gli indici di una rivista come questa permette, così, di percepire non solo le linee di una politica editoriale e il passaggio del testimone fra scuole e generazioni di studiosi, ma il peso che l’azione degli storici può avere nella e per la società. The essay reconstructs the profile of the journal ‘Society and History’ by verifying how coherent it has remained, in the course of forty years, with its original programmatic lines, considering the frequency and profile of the essays published there dedicated to the modern age. History of society, not social history in the strict or exclusive sense, in a space-time that had initially taken into account the history of Western Europe in comparison with Italian history and that has inevitably entered into dialogue with a historiography that has broadened its horizons of analysis. The occasion of this review makes it possible to reflect not only on the similarities and differences in scholarly production between various coeval journals, but also to read the transformations in the direction of an academic instrument gradually subjected to stringent parameters of qualitative evaluation. The last forty years, on the other hand, have on the one hand closed an extremely dense century in terms of historiographical debates and on the other hand opened a century that challenges established traditions and research tools with the threat of an increasingly presentist culture. Interrogating the indexes of a journal such as this one thus allows us to perceive not only the lines of an editorial policy and the passing of the baton between schools and generations of scholars, but the weight that the action of historians can have in and for society.
