In the years preceding the end of the Franco period, some important liberal intellectuals reflected on Spain in writings that the Editorial Finisterre published in the collection «Perspectivas españolas». The texts by Francisco Ayala, Juan Marichal and Américo Castro, examined in this paper, do not intend to prolong the old debate on the national problem: they are a dialogue and a political reflection on the meaning of Spanish nationalist thought.
