In 1728 the French publishing scene discovered the Avis d’une mère à son fils et à sa fille by Anne-Thérèse de Marguenat de Courcelles, known as the marquise de Lambert. This work, hybrid between pedagogical text and moralities, got significant success despite opposition from the salonnière to publish it. The Avis d’une mère à son fils describes the main steps of the moral and social education of a young man from 18th century and provides us a look at how women portrayed men. While the relevance of history and military glory in boys’ education is hardly surprising, it is crucial to emphasize that the marquise de Lambert encourages his son to « work more on his heart than on his mind ».
