In this article, I will analyse marriage as a cultural theme in the novel "La filla estrangera" (2015) by Najat El Hachmi (although at times I will also take into consideration the other works of the writer since gender relations are a constant and transversal theme in all her production). I will begin by presenting the role of women in contemporary migrations and then deepening in the theme of marriage, first as a woman’s destiny and then as imposition and confinement. Finally, I will end up outlining the emancipation trajectory of the protagonist of "La filla estrangera", away from family and traditions, in which she does not recognize herself.

Abstract

In this article, I will analyse marriage as a cultural theme in the novel "La filla estrangera" (2015) by Najat El Hachmi (although at times I will also take into consideration the other works of the writer since gender relations are a constant and transversal theme in all her production). I will begin by presenting the role of women in contemporary migrations and then deepening in the theme of marriage, first as a woman’s destiny and then as imposition and confinement. Finally, I will end up outlining the emancipation trajectory of the protagonist of "La filla estrangera", away from family and traditions, in which she does not recognize herself.
