This article proposes to approach the notion of “performance” from a Peircean semiotic perspective. It starts from the revision of the concept of “performativity” in linguistics, to reflect on the acting effectiveness of languages in the arts linked to new technologies. Peirce’s semiotic perspective allows to postulate an expanded dimension of the concept of “performativity” in which its symbolic, indexical and iconic aspects are included. In a second instance, an articulation is proposed between the notion of performativity as an epistemological lens, of performance as an event and of performatic effects as the production of meaning of the performative act.

Abstract

This article proposes to approach the notion of “performance” from a Peircean semiotic perspective. It starts from the revision of the concept of “performativity” in linguistics, to reflect on the acting effectiveness of languages in the arts linked to new technologies. Peirce’s semiotic perspective allows to postulate an expanded dimension of the concept of “performativity” in which its symbolic, indexical and iconic aspects are included. In a second instance, an articulation is proposed between the notion of performativity as an epistemological lens, of performance as an event and of performatic effects as the production of meaning of the performative act.
