This paper critically introduces the section of Teoria politica 2022 devoted to the topic of voluntary servitude. The research hypothesis is that «voluntary servitude » is an important topic of the conceptual constellation that forged modern political thought. The authors read voluntary servitude both as a brilliant intuition due to the reflection of the young 16th-century humanist Etienne de La Boétie, and as a theoretical tool not limited to its historical context. So, the paper shows that the voluntary servitude plays an important role in the genesis and development of political Modernity, whose interminable crisis we are experiencing today.

Abstract

This paper critically introduces the section of Teoria politica 2022 devoted to the topic of voluntary servitude. The research hypothesis is that «voluntary servitude » is an important topic of the conceptual constellation that forged modern political thought. The authors read voluntary servitude both as a brilliant intuition due to the reflection of the young 16th-century humanist Etienne de La Boétie, and as a theoretical tool not limited to its historical context. So, the paper shows that the voluntary servitude plays an important role in the genesis and development of political Modernity, whose interminable crisis we are experiencing today.
