Civil codes are an effort to provide stability and coherence to several areas of the law. Despite the growing complexity of contemporary societies, codification as a legislative technique has not been abandoned. Codification is, however, just one option on the table. This introductory chapter explores why this option has been so successful, though the mythologies surrounding the first civil codifications are by now behind us, and much has changed both in society and in legal theory since the time those first codes were put into force.

Abstract
Civil codes are an effort to provide stability and coherence to several areas of the law. Despite the growing complexity of contemporary societies, codification as a legislative technique has not been abandoned. Codification is, however, just one option on the table. This introductory chapter explores why this option has been so successful, though the mythologies surrounding the first civil codifications are by now behind us, and much has changed both in society and in legal theory since the time those first codes were put into force.File in questo prodotto:
