The essay will focus on the philosophy and aesthetics of drawing in early 19th century English art literature. In particular, the topic is analysed in its relation with drawing – in primis John Flaxman’s outlines – not only as the primal outcome of an imaginative and non-imitative process, but, and also, as the point of indifference between (or coincidence of ) imagination and fancy. The latter is explored from several perspectives in the light of early 19th century English literary theory, but the problem of interactions/intersections between drawing (design) and imagination (fancy) is also examined as an aspect of European visual art theories.

Abstract

The essay will focus on the philosophy and aesthetics of drawing in early 19th century English art literature. In particular, the topic is analysed in its relation with drawing – in primis John Flaxman’s outlines – not only as the primal outcome of an imaginative and non-imitative process, but, and also, as the point of indifference between (or coincidence of ) imagination and fancy. The latter is explored from several perspectives in the light of early 19th century English literary theory, but the problem of interactions/intersections between drawing (design) and imagination (fancy) is also examined as an aspect of European visual art theories.
