Gino Fano is the first of the important group of Corrado Segre’s disciples and, when he began his university studies in Turin in 1888, various circumstances favored his scientific maturation. The purpose of this essay is to highlight some less known aspects of his life and work taking into consideration the manuscripts and other unpublished documents kept in various archives in Italy and abroad. Three aspects are specially dealt with, namely: • Fano’s research, teaching, and dissemination activities in the wake of Segre’s mastership and legacy, both on the national and on the international scene; • His exile experience in Switzerland after racial discrimination; • Fano’s material and immaterial heritage in his works on threefolds.
