Change society, not the individual. Oppressione e disabilità nel pensiero di Mike Oliver

This article pays tribute to the late English academic and disability rights activist Mike Oliver, who coined the concept ofthe social model of disability in 1983. Disability is a complex phenomenon that challenges the individual model of dis‐ability. This article examines this model, which medicalizes indi‐viduals with disabilities and fails to acknowledge the so‐cietal barriers that create disabling conditions. Drawing on the social model of disability, we analyse the thesis that it isthe product of social norms and structures that exclude and marginalise those who do not fit in. However, we also rec‐ognize the limitations of the social model and call for a more nuanced approach that acknowledges the diversity of dis‐ability experiences. Finally, we urge action to address the barriers that prevent individuals with disabilities from fullyparticipating in society. By exploring the limitations of the traditional individual model of disability and advocating for amore nuanced understanding of disability, we aim to honor Oliver's legacy and continue his work towards a more inclusiveand equitable society.
