General anaesthesia induced and maintained exclusively with injectable drugs (Total Intravenous Anaesthesia - TIVA) is not an ancillary technique to gaseous anaesthesia. If it is true that TIVA is often a valid alternative to gaseous anaesthesia, the latter, in many clinical situations, is not a valid alternative to TIVA. This non-reciprocity lies in the profound pharmacological differences starting from the mechanism of action, betiveen injectable and gaseous anaesthetics and in the simplicity of intravenous administration compared to the trans-pulmonary one. A veterinarian dedicated to anaesthesia should have a good competence in TIVA having a robust theoretical knowledge with a solidpractical knowledge of the «how to do». This lastpart is the objective of this article which aims to offer the reader a collection of practical suggestions and warnings in the execution of TIVA which are too often left out by the authors infavour of the strictly pharmacological part.
