Towards a hermeneutic interpretation of geography In my paper, I will propose a critical reading of geography through the prism of hermeneutic thought. I will draw on the etymology of the word “geography” and retrace a few stages in the history of this discipline, whose epistemological status remains problematic. The aim is to shed light on the reasons why geography can be considered as a “hermeneutical” discipline in the strong sense, for hermeneutics – as we have learned from Heidegger, Gadamer and Ricoeur – always implies an ontological reflection on the condition of the human being as an inhabitant of the planet Earth.
