This paper contrasts installation artworks with sculptures and architectural works. Both works of installation art and most sculptures present three-dimensional objects that we can observe from multiple viewpoints. However, installation artworks do not arouse the kind of imaginings that, according to Susanne Langer, are distinctive of the experience of sculptures. Both works of architecture and works of installation art are spaces that we are supposed to explore from within. However, only installation art is an interactive art form. Based on Berys Gaut’s view of interactivity, the paper proposes to understand works of installation art as multiply instantiable and suggests that they authorize that their public’s actions partly determine their instances.

Abstract
This paper contrasts installation artworks with sculptures and architectural works. Both works of installation art and most sculptures present three-dimensional objects that we can observe from multiple viewpoints. However, installation artworks do not arouse the kind of imaginings that, according to Susanne Langer, are distinctive of the experience of sculptures. Both works of architecture and works of installation art are spaces that we are supposed to explore from within. However, only installation art is an interactive art form. Based on Berys Gaut’s view of interactivity, the paper proposes to understand works of installation art as multiply instantiable and suggests that they authorize that their public’s actions partly determine their instances.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
