The aim of this paper is to discuss the possible presence of a satirical mood in the archaic Greek iambus, taking into account the fragments of Archilochus, Solon and Semonides, and verifying the presence of all the features of satire into this corpus. Satire can perhaps be recognised in a few lines, probably addressed to specific themes and audience, but the fragmentary nature of our texts makes it difficult to come up with firm generalistations.

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to discuss the possible presence of a satirical mood in the archaic Greek iambus, taking into account the fragments of Archilochus, Solon and Semonides, and verifying the presence of all the features of satire into this corpus. Satire can perhaps be recognised in a few lines, probably addressed to specific themes and audience, but the fragmentary nature of our texts makes it difficult to come up with firm generalistations.
