This paper deals with earthquakes that struck the Kingdom of Naples towards the end of the seventeenth century (1688, 1694), when southern Italy were part of the Hispanic Monarchy. These disasters due to natural events were a chapter in the ongoing struggle between the Church, new scientific paradigms and the Spanish authorities. The aftermath of any disaster provided an opportunity for the Church to intervene in order to reinforce and amplify its presence in society, on which its prerogatives were based. In the pursuit of these primarily political activities, the Church operated at various levels, from Apostolic Nuncios to Inquisition tribunals, from dioceses to parishes.
