The relationship between Aeschylus and the Presocratics has been studied by scholars from various points of view, but generally not in a systematic way. Moreover, the majority of these studies have mainly focused on physical and cosmological aspects. The paper analyzes and discusses the alternative interpretation adopted by L.A. Stella, who tries to demonstrate that the religious problem is the key to understanding the originality of Aeschylus’ ‘philosophy’ and to evaluating the real contribution made by the Presocratics, from Xenophanes to Anaxagoras, to the development of his tragedies.

Abstract

The relationship between Aeschylus and the Presocratics has been studied by scholars from various points of view, but generally not in a systematic way. Moreover, the majority of these studies have mainly focused on physical and cosmological aspects. The paper analyzes and discusses the alternative interpretation adopted by L.A. Stella, who tries to demonstrate that the religious problem is the key to understanding the originality of Aeschylus’ ‘philosophy’ and to evaluating the real contribution made by the Presocratics, from Xenophanes to Anaxagoras, to the development of his tragedies.
