This paper is aimed at investigating the markers of proverbs (MOP) in French and Italian. Firstly, proverbs and MOP are defined. Secondly, two comparable reference corpora (one French, frWaC, and one Italian, itWaC) are examined in order to detect the best MOPs in French and Italian. The linguistic analysis of MOPs can provide more details on how ordinary speakers perceive proverbs. Thirdly, two corpora of speeches delivered in French and Italian during plenary sessions of the European Parliament are studied in order to check whether MOPs are used differently in a multilingual and multicultural political-institutional setting.
