This paper analyzes the potential benefits and risks related to the use of the ChatGPT language model as an assistant to support legal practice and scientific research. After describing ChatGPT’s key technical features, the article highlights its ability to provide detailed answers in short times, with consequent advantages in terms of productivity and efficiency. However, it also analyzes some issues, such as the production of inaccurate information, the presence of implicit biases and the inability to fully replace human experience. Relevant legal issues also emerge regarding responsibility for provided contents and data protection. While ChatGPT can represent a useful support tool, its indiscriminate use still seems premature, especially in legal contexts. The reflection concludes by underscoring the need for a responsible use of these technologies to promote their equitable and predictable development.
