Choosing the most efcient sampling methods is the basis of surveys aimed at detecting and monitoring species for conser vation purposes. In the context of the current biodiversity crisis, reported in many parts of the world, the need to identify new areas of occurrence due to anthropogenic changes (including changes due to global warming) and to fll the gap in the available data for many endangered species are increasingly important. Here, we report the use of UV light as an experimen tal tool for sampling the caterpillars of Proserpinus proserpina, a protected moth in Europe. The results indicated a clear advantage of night surveys using this technique, allowing the caterpillars to be spotted three times more frequently compared to using a normal fashlight. For this reason, this method could further improve data collection, even with little experience and, therefore, we recommend it. Finally, a monitoring method was provided that integrated this sampling technique, aimed at making the surveillance of this protected species more practical and efective.
