The paper illustrates a holistic approach for restoring historic gardens, from the historic analysis to the knowledge of the present values, to the proposal of guidelines for restoration and future sustainable management. The Park of Moncalieri Royal Castle (Turin metropolitan area) realized in the XIX century was studied as Living Lab. Since 2018, a research project has been performed. To propose sustainable guidelines and criteria for its restoration a multidisciplinary project was carried out. The evaluation of the current structure, analysis of the botanical component and the recognition of historical permanences were performed. In 2025, the Park will be restored and opened to the public (Ministry of Culture, PNRR, Historical Gardens). In this context, a set of indicators will be defined, and the ecosystem services provided will be quantified. For understanding and conserving the heritage, using multiple tools, innovative multidisciplinary approaches and defining a monitoring plan are priorities.
