The article analyzes the main novelties of the amended Eurodac regulation, adopted in June 2024 together with several legislative instruments of the New Pact on Migration and Asylum. Established in 2003 to prevent asylum shopping, Eurodac is now a multifunctional system that supports the identification of migrants, asylum seekers, and irregular residents to facilitate repatriation and monitor mobility within the EU. The recent 2024 reform further expanded access to the collected data, including fingerprints and facial images, now also including minors from the age of 6, and introduced new categories of people and registrable data. This change, integrated into the broader EU interoperability framework, raises concerns about privacy and has a significant impact on migrants’ rights, increasingly associating people on the move with potential threats.

Abstract
The article analyzes the main novelties of the amended Eurodac regulation, adopted in June 2024 together with several legislative instruments of the New Pact on Migration and Asylum. Established in 2003 to prevent asylum shopping, Eurodac is now a multifunctional system that supports the identification of migrants, asylum seekers, and irregular residents to facilitate repatriation and monitor mobility within the EU. The recent 2024 reform further expanded access to the collected data, including fingerprints and facial images, now also including minors from the age of 6, and introduced new categories of people and registrable data. This change, integrated into the broader EU interoperability framework, raises concerns about privacy and has a significant impact on migrants’ rights, increasingly associating people on the move with potential threats.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
