This contribution provides a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the phenomenon of variation in oral-tradition toponymy, understood as the simultaneous existence of two or more names for the same place. Observation of the data in the Atlante Toponomastico del Piemonte Montano (ATPM) database leads to a description of the extent and forms of variation, identifying their linguistic, historical and social causes and motivations.
