The article considers different approaches to the history of philosophy and the reasons for practicing it, in relation to the various kinds of sources that are used in different cases. A progressive enlargement and opening of the historically given social fields of philosophy is sketched and analyzed, showing the import it has on the very understanding of what philosophy is and on the apprehension of its mutable essence.
