The aim of this chapter is to provide a comprehensive overview of the Italian translations, both complete and partial, of Adam Mickiewicz’s masterpiece, from the anonymous translation published in the Milanese magazine Il Pungolo (1871) to the recent poetic retranslation by Silvano De Fanti (2018). Drawing on Holmes (1971), through a careful analysis of the translation strategies adopted in the Italian editions, an attempt will be made to understand how the dominant trends in the translation of poetic texts in different times reflect the changing expectations of the receiving culture with respect to the source culture. An important part of the essay is devoted to the publishing history of the numerous Italian (re)translations.
