In the last few decades, William James’s book The Varieties of Religious Experience (1902) has garnered significant interest among philosophers and sociologists exploring the role and forms of religion in our time. A key moment in this renewed engagement with James’s work was the publication of Charles Taylor’s Varieties of Religion Today (2002). However, James’s claim that his book is A Study in Human Nature (as stated in the subtitle) is often overlooked. In this paper, after examining what James means by “human nature” and the method he employs in his inquiry, I will assess whether this aspect of his thought remains relevant to contemporary philosophical reflection.

Abstract
In the last few decades, William James’s book The Varieties of Religious Experience (1902) has garnered significant interest among philosophers and sociologists exploring the role and forms of religion in our time. A key moment in this renewed engagement with James’s work was the publication of Charles Taylor’s Varieties of Religion Today (2002). However, James’s claim that his book is A Study in Human Nature (as stated in the subtitle) is often overlooked. In this paper, after examining what James means by “human nature” and the method he employs in his inquiry, I will assess whether this aspect of his thought remains relevant to contemporary philosophical reflection.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
