This contribution tackles the history of colonial novels in post-war Italy. Providing a study of a series of novels published after 1945, but deeply entrenched within fascist colonial discourse, it shows the persistence of colonial discourse in Italian culture well after the loss of the colonies in 1947. Through the analysis of the unpublished records of the “Fondazione Giuliana Civinini” and its “awards for the best novels concerning colonies” between 1928 and 1953, this essay shows the degree of continuity that char-acterized the transition from fascism to the Republic. At the same time, taking into consideration the reading opinions of the juries of the prize, it also shows the various forms of negotiation towards fascist and colonial pasts enacted in post-war Italy.
