After an introduction on the Penitential Psalms by women and for women in early modern Europe, the essay studies the rewritings found in sixteenth-century Italy: Laura Battiferri’s I sette salmi penitenziali di David (1564) and Chiara Matraini’s Considerationi sopra i sette salmi penitentiali del gran re e propeta Davit (1586). The paper also investigates the dedicatees of these publications and closes with a note regarding Mary Sidney’s translation of the Psalms.
