This paper is a presentation of the main inspiring principles that governed the design and the creation of the Tree of Philosophers, an online database of institutional genealogical relations between philosophers. Aims, methodologies, difficulties, limits, and future perspectives are examined. The paper also provides some useful background to the other contributions belonging to this issue of the DR2 Working Papers, which is wholly devoted to the Tree of Philosophers.
