The essay will focus on John Milton (1608-1674) as poet and essayist and his influence on the theories on art, art criticism, art philosophy, and aesthetics developed by the eminent artists who led the Royal Academy or structurally contributed to its cultural evolution, from its co-founder and its first President, Joshua Reynolds, to Martin Archer Shee. The main objects of analysis are therefore the decades spanning from the Royal Academy's foundation (1768) to the first quarter of the 19th Century, and special relevance is devoted to the importance of Milton’s thought for the elaboration of the Royal Academy’s theoretical and critical attitude towards visual art also as a medium with only apparently marginal 'political' implications.

Abstract
The essay will focus on John Milton (1608-1674) as poet and essayist and his influence on the theories on art, art criticism, art philosophy, and aesthetics developed by the eminent artists who led the Royal Academy or structurally contributed to its cultural evolution, from its co-founder and its first President, Joshua Reynolds, to Martin Archer Shee. The main objects of analysis are therefore the decades spanning from the Royal Academy's foundation (1768) to the first quarter of the 19th Century, and special relevance is devoted to the importance of Milton’s thought for the elaboration of the Royal Academy’s theoretical and critical attitude towards visual art also as a medium with only apparently marginal 'political' implications.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
