The paper discusses the archaeological landscape in which the megasite of Seleucia on the Tigris was founded by Seleucus I (311-281 BCE) during the end of the 4th cent. BCE and abandoned at the beginning of the 3rd cent. CE. Through the cross-checking of Corona, other satellite imagery and maps processed from DSM, it has been possible to identify numerous ‘undetected’ sites and propose a first preliminary reconstruction of the network of canals in the area within the period considered.

Abstract

The paper discusses the archaeological landscape in which the megasite of Seleucia on the Tigris was founded by Seleucus I (311-281 BCE) during the end of the 4th cent. BCE and abandoned at the beginning of the 3rd cent. CE. Through the cross-checking of Corona, other satellite imagery and maps processed from DSM, it has been possible to identify numerous ‘undetected’ sites and propose a first preliminary reconstruction of the network of canals in the area within the period considered.
