Talking about Global Citizenship Education today requires combining pedagogical, political and economic reflections, through a critical analysis of the idea of citizenship implicit in models of political liberalism and a rethinking of the links with multiculturalism. From the perspective promoted by critical pedagogy, examining these pedagogical issues through the lens of economics can allow us to question the models of knowledge and society taken for granted and presumed to be neutral and universal, and to bring to light the social and political power relations underlying them, in order to explore a new connection between education, equity and global socio-economic policies, and to focus on the emancipatory role of education in building more equitable and inclusive societies. In this sense, the essay places the discussion around Global Citizenship Education in the current debate, by questioning the systemic interaction between education, equity and economics; by problematising the notion of human capital; and, finally, by recognising the role of education in promoting intercultural citizenship oriented towards social justice.

Abstract
