The paper analyses the strategies of 32 early career researchers to cope with a possible exit from the academy, looking on the one hand at the reasons for leaving this career and, on the other, at the options considered viable. The analytical lens we use is that of gender, considered as a condition that provides constraints and opportunities, focusing particularly on Stem disciplines, in which women are underrepresented; we also consider the role of the territorial context to highlight how differences between geographical areas intersect the perspectives offered by the academic system.
