Mortal Loucura: A sonnet by Gregório de Matos from Baroque poetry to Brazilian songbook. The paper takes as its starting point the 17th-century “rebel” poet from Bahia, Gregório de Matos (1636-1696), nicknamed Boca do Inferno for his sharp satirical wit. It begins by examining a sonnet in which the poet employs an “echo” structure, whereby the final word of one line repeats the last syllables of the preceding word. The focus then shifts to an analysis of the musical adaptation of the sonnet by scholar and composer José Miguel Wisnik, who transformed its verses into the song Mortal Loucura, first recorded with Caetano Veloso in 2005 for a performance by the Brazilian contemporary dance company Corpo.
