Over the past few years, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has brought significant and rapid changes in nearly every aspect of life. Although there has been quite a scientific debate about the benefits of AI implementation in the last decade, the discourse on the risks of these technologies is still scarce and fragmented. Therefore, the present manuscript aims to review the current literature on the risks related to the implementation of AI in organizations, by providing a conceptual theoretical framework, and suggesting directions for future research. To bridge this research gap, the authors conducted an in-depth systematic literature review of 56 papers retrieved from the Scopus database. The review provides several contributions to the field of AI and risk management, as well as practitioners and policymakers. First, we provide a comprehensive state-of-the-art of the stream, depicting the trends in publications, its geographical distribution, and the annual rates of scientific production. Furthermore, as far as theoretical contributions are concerned, we provide a conceptualization of the plethora of risks associated with AI implementation, as well as potential countermeasures to mitigate their negative impacts. Finally, a structured research agenda is presented, on the basis of the several gaps found through the critical analysis of the sample. From a practical perspective, our manuscript features a few recommendations for both practitioners and policymakers.
