Over the last few decades, one of the most evident social phenomena has been the progressive aging of the world’s population. The rapid increase in the number of elderly people presents an unprecedented challenge for society, particularly for traditional healthcare and social care systems. In response to these challenges, one promising solution is the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to help the elderly population live better, healthier lives and maintain their independence in their preferred environment for longer. This contribution aims to provide an overview of the application areas of AI in the care of the elderly, highlighting initial uses and ongoing experiments. It presents some devices and roles of AI in elder care, with a particular focus on an innovative experience: the Ancelia system, implemented in some nursing homes (RSA) in Piedmont managed by the SocialCoop consortium.
