What impact did the reorganization of forestry, imposed by the Austro-Hungarian Empire in mid-nineteenth century Tyrol and Vorarlberg, have on the Fiemme Valley? Starting from this question, the study pursues a twofold aim: to reconstruct the process of selecting and hiring a private Forest Administrator by the Comunità generale di Fiemme, and to explore the research potential of the documentation produced by this office. Giovanni Franzelin, who held the position from 1878 onwards, played a pivotal role in the technical and economic modernization of collective property management. His records, when combined with other sources, shed light on the evolution of this local institution during a period of growing imperial centralization.
